... And the Race Is on for City CouncilGary Crosby just announced that he will seek the District 3 City Council seat in 2009. Crosby, long active in civic affairs, said he has considered for a while running for the seat that Jim Soule now holds. Crosby, a local businessman, sits on the Zoning Board of Appeals and is on the board of the Evergreen Credit Union. He has run for the City Council previously but never held a seat. Crosby has been in the news lately, as a lead critic of city laws that allow dogs on Willard Beach year round. Crosby heads Save Willard Beach, which is seeking to put a question on the November ballot asking residents to ban dogs in the late spring and summer, and require them to be leashed on the beach off-season. Prior to his activism over dog-walking at the beach, Crosby opposed the reconstruction plan for South Portland High School. In the final two weeks before the citywide vote on the project, Crosby posted signs around the city with the message: “$56 Million Is Too Much!” The referendum was defeated by voters. CommentsBy Gary on 2009 06 10 Dave, I would like to give you my reasoning behind the law. This may or may not change your mind on the conservative issue. First I think this law we are proposing is easier to follow and less intrusive. Second with rights come responsibility and with that I think it is not at all responsible for people to use the beach as a toilet for their pets and then tell you and me all set it’s your turn. To me that’s wrong. So the live and let live is all fine and dandy but I don’t think that’s the case here. Sharing means leaving it useful for the next person and right now there are a lot of people that feel the beach is not useful afterwards. By Dave on 2009 05 14 I wouldn’t necessarily label this guy as a conservative, maybe a fiscal one if he supports lowering taxes and lowering spending. But I tend to think of a conservative of someone who has a live let live type of personality, stay out of my business and I’ll stay out of yours type you know? Someone who wants less government restrictions rather than more, which is why with all the restrictions he wants on dog walking I just don’t see as a conservative viewpoint. Which by the way is an amazing waste of time with so many more pressing issues facing us today. I just have a hard time believing it, it seems a little more self serving. When we are trying to get this city/country up and going again do you really want our elected representatives top priority to be a which hunt for puppy poo on the beach? I would rather my tax dollars be spent elsewhere, but to each their own I guess right? By dittohead on 2009 03 14 Gary Crosby is a real conservative, we need him now more then ever, instead of the socialist we currently have. He has my vote, just let the man speak his mind without harassing him with endless questions. Rush is right and so is Gary. When it comes to cutting taxes, and keeping the school board liberals out of our pockets, Mr. Crosby is the man for me. By Quint on 2009 03 14 Dittohead: I sure hope you are going to sign up as Gary’s campaign manager! By dittohead on 2009 03 14 I wish you all would leave Gary Crosby alone, especially you Paul B. “Liberalism, socialism, and utopianism are a dead end, just look at the former Soviet Union. If you like their system, maybe you should move there.”..Rush Limbaugh. Gary is the only one I can think of out on the front lines, taking the heat, to make our town a better place, he is the real American, maybe Paul you should take a look at a few history books before our entire country is run by comrades and union bosses. By Paul B on 2009 03 13 Gary your response to Josephine does not answer the question I posed to you and that is “why did you choose to remain anonymous”. The answer you posted is just a rehash of the legal reasons that allowed you to do so. I wanted to know what motivated you, a person who insists that people who post on this sight always identify themselves by name in your pursuit of I guess Crosby style “transparency”, yet when you choose to influence an election result in a most public way, ie. flyers and signs, you choose to hide your identity. Sure you had the right to, now lets hear the reasons. On question two you claim that on this site you identified the school board member who you said attacked you but can not find your words and instead suggest that we dig through the always poorly recorded public record to get some sense of what you are talking about. Why not just answer the question now as you have not aswered it to date. Question three concerning the flyer. You now admit that you did not answer in earlier posts although stating that you did, and are now willing to have it posted if requested by the editor of this site. This is actually your first answer to any of my questions, you do have the flyer and are willing to have it posted. Question four same as number one still waiting to hear a real answer. Question five you will be posting the names and the examples of what you describe as a people who have ganged up on you and attacked you for us to read on your website. Again a question claimed to be answered in the past but actually ignored by you. In summary you publically announced that you had answered all of these questions in earlier posts but it is now clear that that was untrue. You had actually answered none of them hoping that the public would just take your word for it and not take the time to look back at the record. If this is how you behave as a candidate for public office how will you react to tough questions asked of you should you be elected to city council? I get the sense that the pattern would continue and we would not be well served by someone not willing to explain his own position, past actions, and words. It has been a struggle just to get the type of response from you today I am glad you tried to make an effort but it still falls way short. Paul B. By Gary on 2009 03 12 Paul here is a reply. Citizens have asked Gary to explain positions he has already taken, things he has said publically, and actions he has taken in regard to public policy in South Portland. He only answers to questions he wants to and ignores the rest. Once again here are some simple questions. 1. Why did you choose to be anonymous when inserting a flier into the Sentry? { Look below} Previous post
By Jospehine on 2009 03 02 Here are quotes from Gary Crosby in his letter to the editor published in the March 2nd Portland Press Herald. I know you are only allowed 250 words but wow this guy has some fecal focus. “put dog poop down” “where dogs defecate” “have pooped and peed” “to pee and poop on” Where is Gary when asked by the citizen’s of South Portland to answer a few questions about his past activities in regard to his candidacy for city council? Apparently out counting dog piles. By Quint on 2009 03 01 Look at the whole Gary Crosby quote: Crosby anticipates the new rules will simply create more tension, which he believes will mean good news for Save Willard Beach at the polls. “Had I scripted it, I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” he said of the new rules. Crosby said Save Willard Beach will consider political advertising in advance of the referendum There are many of us out there who even think the encounter itself was scripted. We anticipate “incidents” often involving the same complaining homeowners. Watch for the names of the people involved—I imagine there will be a pattern. Thank goodness for FOI. I don’t even have a dog and there’s one man there who acts like he owns the beach, scowling at all go by, making it a very unpleasant experience. One time I even saw him with a large scythe and I am sure to keep my children 10 feet away from HIM. Talk about imagery and public relations. Welcome to Willard Beach! As for implicitly and gleefully applauding violence on the beach, be it a verbal argument between two individuals or a physical assault on a dog, Mr. Crosby has shown us his true colors. I will not need to ask him any further questions By Can_youdo_this? on 2009 03 01 Joseph- I saw those comments and I am appalled that Gary Crosby is really looking forward to more neighbor vs. neighbor behavior. It’s a terrible thing to say about the city and it’s residents and makes us all look like a bunch of hicks who beat animals and fight each other and have a good old time doing it. And to sound like such a victim. Please, it’s really getting old. If you can’t stand the heat… like dog owners aren’t criticized at every bump in the road and have even been called “bullies” by city councilors! The truth is it’s people who don’t agree with Gary who are called “They” and “they” are bashing him. Older Comments
