District 5 May Yield Competition

District 5—the home turf for two-term Councilor Jim Hughes—may yield some competition as election season gets under way.
Three residents have indicated that they plan to seek office: Hughes, Brian Dearborn and Mark Gandolfo. The three have obtained papers at City Hall to run for the District 5 Council seat, but now each must get signatures from 100 registered voters.
Hughes is a self-employed computer programmer who lives on Broadway and has made easing traffic and road congestion priorities of office. He also has helped the city establish written guidelines for seeking bids when making purchases, and helped set minimum standards for gas mileage when buying vehicles.
Gandolfo, who is retired from the Coast Guard, currently serves on the Planning Board, but would leave that post if elected. Gandolfo says he has strong interest in giving back to the community. He served on the former Recycling committee (now Energy and Recycling), as well as task forces that looked at uses for the Armory and ways to ease truck traffic on Broadway.
Dearborn is a long-time South Portland resident and former City Councilor. He did not return calls for comment.

Tom Blake gets my “vote"-reasonable, well liked, positive, active in the community, interested in SoPo; not unlike Jim Soule or Linda Boudreau but Linda
