Dog Group Plans to Pass Out Flyers

UPDATE: SoPo DOG’s meet-and-greet—scheduled for this weekend—has been canceled due to the rainy weather.

The South Portland Dog Owners Group plans to pass out educational materials today and Sunday at Willard Beach, Hinckley Park and Bug Light Park.
Dog walkers will be given contact info for the group and also be invited to join.

DOG had hoped the city would make education a linchpin of its dog-walking policies but the Council has not shown a lot of interest in this area.

The group also plans to start a push to increase membership in the Willard Beach neighborhood, where many home owners choose the beach to walk their canines.

Wrote DOG prez Crystal Goodrich to members: “Dog walking increases purchases at businesses in South Portland, and we need to make that clear. We need to ask for some kind of support from these businesses, making it clear the impact it will have on them. Even if they will only let us put up flyers that is a help, making it clear that they are visitor friendly businesses of town (for our neighboring community members who come to buy food, coffee, and dog items here as well as their groceries). All of these purchases keeps jobs in the city and the economy steadier than it might be.”

The group also wants to emphasize how members work to clean up trash and keep beaches accessible to everyone, Goodrich wrote.

This makes no sense to me.  The DOG group is going to now start bullying businesses?  So, if they don’t support the DOG group will there be a boycott? Oh dear, the horror!  If a business is smart, it will keep a neutral stance on this issue.
