Gary Crosby: SoPo Has a ‘Definitive Answer’

Gary Crosby offered the following statement on the defeat of a referendum he led to limit dogs on Willard Beach:

“I am very happy with the large turnout on Tuesday and certainly I would have liked to have won.

“However, I think we all won in the most important thing of all, Democracy.  We had large voter participation and a definitive answer to the question.  It just can’t get much better than that!

“My primary reason to forward this referendum was to get our citizens involved and clear up a long-standing issue and I am proud of that.  I saw people vote that had never been involved before; what a great sight that is to see.  I know some voted for me and some against me but nonetheless, they got educated, involved and voted, and I thank everyone for that.”

tired of issue,  Actually it’s pretty simple.  I have a dog as do others that do not respond well to voice control and would like to have a place to run her.  I did not push it during the referendum because I did not want to mix the two issues.  This has nothing to do with the beach.  A well run dog park is a good place to bring a dog and for the life of me I can’t figure out why anybody would oppose one.  If they don’t want to bring their dog there then don’t.  This is a progressive step towards recreation for dogs that can’t run off leash in other areas of our city.  I would hope all dog owners would favor such a step.  What I will be proposing is city owned property,  3 acres in size, 1000 feet from the nearest residence, has trees and grass, and already has parking.  These are all good positive pieces when put together should prove to be a good dog park and an asset to South Portland.  I will also be offering some equipment and labor to help build it and defer some costs.  Just because SOPODOG and I disagreed one one issue it doesn’t mean we can’t work together on another.  The last one is over and done with, time to go forward.

Gary, Saw the recent Current. Why are you now proposing a dog park?  Seems like YOU can’t drop the dog issue.

Gullwing,  You are right about the web site.  It dealt with the dog issue only and that was it.  There was no reason to leave it up and continue paying for it.  The vote was a clear one and I had said I will support the outcome.  Leaving it up would only continue to make an issue of it.  On to other things.  Apparently someone just can’t drop it.

Anonymous, When the savewillardbeach site was up it dealt directly with the issue of dogs on the beach. That matter has been settled through the polls. I would think anything to do with storm water drainage should be reported to the Maine DEP or EPA. Have high levels of some toxic substance been detected ?

Hey whatever happened to the Save Willard Beach website?  Its seems to be unavailable.  Does that mean there is nothing left to save?  How about storm water run off?  If this group really felt so passionate about Willard Beach they might continue to work on other issues.  Or was it just a bunch of divisive nonsense?

Amen! The people have spoken and I really do hope that we have heard the last of this for at least a year.  I appreciate Mr. Crosby’s sentiment that voter turnout is important and second his opinion that democracy won.
