Group Collecting Signatures for Restricting Dogs at Beach

A citizens’ group headed by resident Gary Crosby has started the process of collecting 933 signatures to bring a proposed ban on dogs at the beach to a citywide vote in November.
Save Willard Beach—the group Crosby heads—needs the signatures of 5 percent of the registered voters in SoPo for its proposed referendum to appear on the ballot.
The group wants to keep dogs off Willard Beach in the summer, and require them to be leashed on the shorefront the rest of the year.
Last week, the city’s corporate counsel approved the following wording for the proposed law:
“No person owning or in custody of or control of any dog shall permit such dog to enter upon Willard Beach between April 15 and Oct. 15. Dogs are allowed on Willard Beach between Oct. 16 and April 14 during park hours, if on leash and under owner’s control.”
Crosby plans to do direct mail advertising in support of the ban, in the weeks before the vote.
Meanwhile, the Council is putting the finishing touches on a revision of existing law that keeps current policies in place allowing dog walkers on the beach year-round, with morning hours in the summer. The revisions are based on recommendations from a citizens’ task force.
“Most of the Council feels a referendum could divide the community,” Mayor Tom Blake said. “My preference is to undertake other processes, and, in this case, we’re trying to do it through the citizens’ task force. I’m going to continue to support the task force recommendation and the process we’re going through now.’‘

Gary, I posed the question and made no reference to your business:

Gary, just wondering why you entered some of your posts regarding this issue under the name of “Ghost of Maine Today”?

Just curious,  I am not sure what you mean.

Gary, reread the question.  Kelly didn’t pose it and it makes no reference to your business.

Kelly,  As ghost of Maine said we are not the same person, how ever I do like him/her.  I don’t need an alias.  It is interesting to me that you feel that the choice to hurt some people is through their business.  I knew when I started this that there would be a few people like you out there and that was already calculated in.  After all I am one of those dirty rotten self centered conservative capitalists. I will tell you that I still use one of the businesses that supports dogs on the beach even though we disagree on this ONE issue.  The quality product he makes has nothing to do with dogs on the beach.  There is always more to life than one issue.  It’s to bad the dog owners that want to walk their dogs on Willard have to divide the city like this.  If they would just share 50/50 this would not be an issue.

Believe me dude, It ain’t Gary. I am however, one of the “dirty dozen” (How many posts will that be used in from now on ?)I live amongst you and plot against you, I collected signatures, maybe even a member of so po’ dog. Sorry to leave ya twistin’ ...  but I’m a ghost.

One thing is the excessive limit of having dogs on leash in the winter is what makes me vote no. There is no need of that. if it is 50/50 then why can’t they play off leash in the winter? This rule asks for too much.

KellyMartin,

I do not live on Beach Street and actually I never go to Willard Beach.  I do however walk on the Greenbelt and am constantly approached by dogs whose owners always say “Don’t worry, he’s just being friendly”  I do not like dogs and do not like being accosted by them.  How do the owners know for sure that the dog at that moment will not decide to take a bite out of my leg?  The answer is—they don’t.  Perhaps I will start a referendum to have dogs banned from the Greenbelt Walkway.  Actually, my point is that there are numerous places in the area to walk your dog and I feel Willard Beach (or any beach) should not be one.

Ghostofmainetoday, SPCitizen, Jaywalker and Gary, surely you must realize that politics go beyond just “what does dog stuff have to do with my business”? You are trying to take away something from me I enjoy every day, walking my dog on Willard Beach. I will take away something you enjoy, Money. That’s how it works. If you think your business and your character are separate from one another you are surely missing the point. When a business owner puts forth good efforts toward the community I frequent that business. You and your colleagues are not being community friendly, just taking away something many people enjoy that is part of many local communities, so I will behave in kind. It’s Karma after all, isn’t it? And Ghost- I have no doubt you have already signed the petition to put that disgrace of a referendum on a ballot. Please, we all know who writes these comments, now don’t we? And do you all live on Beach St? In the same house? It all sounds like the same rhetoric to me.
And Gary if you are a true small businessman then why are you setting yourself up to hurt the income of others? When they benefit from visitors why are you denying them that right? It’s not being a good community member all around. That’s politics, if you want to run for office then you have to get used to how it works.
