Not Just a Motorcycle, It’s a Harley

The South Portland Police issued a press release today announcing that the department just won a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.  Harley-Davidson has a long and vaulted history of outfitting police departments with their motorcycles, dating back to 1908. Today more than 3,200 police agencies use Harleys. Police value the bikes for their design and durability. They also have a high resale value and they are a good PR tool since the motorcycles are popular with the public.
Here is the press release: “The South Portland Police Department has won a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Lt. Todd Bernard and Officer Peter MacVane were participating in the 8th Annual America’s 911 Foundation Ride this past week.  This ride acts as a tribute to the victims of 9/11 and a fundraiser for scholarships for the children of first responders.  Approximately 80 police officers escorted between 800 and 1000 motorcycles as they visited all three crash sites from the September 11, 2001 attacks.
To show appreciation for the agencies allowing officers to escort the ride, a drawing was held for a Harley Davidson police motorcycle to be given to a participating agency.  Lt. Bernard and Officer MacVane were present in New York City when the department was drawn for the grand prize.  The motorcycle will be delivered in mid September and formally presented to the department at that time.
After being outfitted with emergency equipment and city council approval the bike will be placed into service in the department’s motor unit.
More information about America’s 911 ride and the foundation can be found at: http://www.americas911foundation.org/”

Nice ride! The only other prize at last nights city council meeting was Linda Boudreau’s councilor round robin comments complaining about citizen’s speaking out against poor representation on the council.  She scolded the media for allowing people to post anonymous comments about issues that are important to them.  This council is notorious for not returning phone calls or email.  They have never been swayed to vote in favor of citizens concerns through the normal channels like citizen discussion part 1 or 2 so what other recourse to the good people of SOPO have but to vent their frustrations on comment boards.  This result deserves some anger and pointed discussion even if hurts Linda’s political feelings.
Last thing to note.  We who are environmentally conscious appreciate Tom Blake and his example of what an excellent councilor should look like.  I for one am also grateful that he was the only one not to grovel over the results of the Art All Around contest during councilor round robin.

Now if Blake would just answer emails he’d be perfect !

I didn’t see the meeting on tv, but if Boudreau actually complained about her constituents, the people that elected her, then she has some nerve as a public official. She should worry less about what we are saying and worry more about why we are saying it and how to fix it. It is obvious she only cares about herself.

This is in response to anon regarding me not answering emails.  I am at my computer a lot and receive between 50-100 emails on a daily basis. I try very hard to respond to all that necessitate a reply. I try to make myself available to the people I represent.  Being human, I do miss one on occasion.  I just checked my old mail and found a communication four days old that I had not yet responded to.  I just responded to that email.  If anon is referring to another communication, I apologize for not getting back to you.  Can you please resend your request and I will promptly reply.  On occasion I call on the phone as that seems more appropriate.  At this time I await several calls to be returned.
As always, never hesitate to contact me with comments of questions.
Sincerely,
Tom Blake
Councilor At-large

Can’t wait to see it!  Congrats to the police department.

How is it that our “under staffed” police department is able to allow not one but TWO police officers to take the time to go on this motorcycle ride? Winning this motorcycle is nice for the City and the Police Department however, the PD has made an issue about not being able to keep up with the everyday calls for their service because they don’t have enough personnel. Unless these officers attended this event out of the “goodness of their heart” on their own time - I question whether the police Chief was really utilizing his “over burdened” staff in an appropriate fashion.
