UPDATE: Next Stop for Ballot Proposal Is City Council

UPDATE, 11:30 a.m.: Gary Crosby reports that he turned in additional signatures that have been verified and provide his group the requisite number for getting the dog ban on the ballot.

ORIGINAL POST: Word from the South Portland City Clerk’s Office this morning is that ballot initiative organizers calling for a partial ban of dogs from Willard Beach are three signatures short of getting their proposed referendum certified as a ballot item for a citywide vote in November.

Organizer Gary Crosby responded that he has another two petitions, with a total of 24 signatures, already in hand that he plans to drop off at City Hall today for verification.

If the city is able to confirm three more signatures of registered voters, the City Council will consider the proposed ballot item at its regularly scheduled June 15 meeting. The Council has the choice to adopt the rule changes or forward them to voters to decide at the ballot box.

Crosby said that members of Save Willard Beach plan to turn out for that meeting to ask city leaders to allow voters to decide the issue. Crosby’s grassroots group is proposing a six-months on, six-months off rule for dog walkers at Willard Beach. His law changes also calls for canines on the beach to be leashed at all times.

“Win or lose, let the people decide,” Crosby said today.

Guess the SOPODOG group has issues also. See the “steady voter turnout” story. Why hassle voters for a different viewpoint ?

Excellent suggestion !!! Then in the winter they would have their open beach with no snow. Not many use this area now so crowding isn’t an issue…

Why not move the social coffee talk SoPoDog group to Bug Light Park?  Seems like the perfect location, wide open space, off leash allowed, water to swim in, room to romp…

Observationsontheobserver….....thank you for not quibbling, my mistake, “nationality” would have been a far better word to use in the circumstances. Thank you for discreetly pointing out my error !

Not once have I ever said anybody was incompetent.  Those are your words not mine.  You should go read the minutes all the way through.  It will be very educational.  In fact I would encourage anyone interested in what went on to read them.

Gary, so when you are accusing him of blatant bias so that he might walk his own dogs and/or incompetence in his own field, you are not calling into his question his reputation?
Are you now saying you respect his reputation and medical degree?  Slippery slope.

Did you really say people who don’t share your heritage (we won’t quibble about that term here)just represent background noise? These people pay taxes in your community and are your neighbors! Are you really saying they should have no say in the quality of life of South Portland because they hold a different passport?

Don’t speak for me, Gary,  I am quite sure I don’t speak for you and don’t ever remember saying I speak for everyone.  As far as the Dr.  I only repeat what he has said and that I disagree with him.  The words I repeat where said by him in a meeting on the task force and approved by him as well as the others on the committee.  Then entered into the minutes and posted on the city web site.  I have said nothing slanderous and never intend too.
You just never know, I could lose a 4th time.  It’s good to give people a choice.

“I for one will take my family of 3 to Willard beach when the ban goes into effect. From all the stories I read in the local papers, alot of people consider Willard beach the destination for their dogs. The Press Herald article talked to 5 people (I think) and none of them were from South Portland.”
“because people from other towns take their dogs there,”
“If you want to have Willard Beach to be “residents only” you might want to have a referendum….”
Sharky…........I know you are incommunicado!, but the statements that you cite as responses from me were responses to the opening paragraph of Marcy’s entry, not as you have stated. You will also note that she did not say “again”. Also if you would note I asked her if she would clarify her statement which she did not.  I did not dispute her assertion that more people will go to the Beach if there is a ban on dog access because she does not know that as a fact and nor do I.
As with your other blog to me, questioning my psyche, I do not think it is me “twisting and misrepresenting” !
Oh yes, you are right it is 2 hours ! I am sort of ambivalent about the evening hours, nobody really asked for them, they were donated. It will be interesting to see how they play out, so to speak.
Well, cheerio old chap….......you are not going to take your ball home with you are you ?!!

I disagree with the last post. If you are a non citizen , unable to vote, your heritage has a huge relevance. Since you have no direct say, the ability to vote, you are merely background noise. I will be voting to ban dogs in the summer and 6 months on 6 months off is more than equitable. An resource such as the beach should be enjoyed by humans over animals. The inability for dog walkers not to use it becomes a matter of inconvenience, not a violation of ones rights. No body is saying people can’t come to the beach, just dogs. What part of that don’t you understand ? Thank you Gary and the folks that helped you accomplish this much needed task. Thank god in America we still vote on issues that affect everyone. I’m sure it will pass by a landslide.
