Sex Offender Sentenced; Undercover Sting Led to Arrest

South Portland police issued a statement today on a West Bath man’s conviction for soliciting a child over the Internet. Police had arrested Terry Lee in 2007 as part of an undercover sting. Here is the release: ”TERRY LEE, 52, from West Bath, Maine, pleaded guilty in Cumberland County Superior Court to Attempted Gross Sexual Assault and Solicitation of a Child by Computer to Commit a Prohibited Act. LEE was arrested by the South Portland Police Department in January 2007 during one of several online, undercover sting operations in which the department teamed with Perverted Justice, an online watchdog group involved in the protection of children on the internet (http://www.pervertedjustice.com). LEE was sentenced to 5 years, all but 1 year suspended and 3 years probation. He was immediately taken into custody at the conclusion of the hearing and will be a Lifetime Sex Offender Registrant. This case was investigated by South Portland Police Det. Frank Stepnick and prosecuted by Assistance DA Robert “Bud” Ellis of the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office.”

Having seen some of Dateline NBC’s segments that collaborate with pervertedjustice, it seems like some of the arrests they facilitate could have a problem holding up in court.  The actors sometimes go out of their way to almost entrap some of these men.  That’s not to say the vast majority of these men aren’t guilty, it just seems like sometimes the perverted justice actors can get pretty aggressive, which may be unhelpful if the defendant manages to find a lawyer who’s good.
