Smith, Hughes, Coward Win Council

Local election results are in: Businesswoman Patti Smith beat Steve Onos, 7,527-4,207, to fill the District 2 seat that incumbent Kay Loring will vacate.
Incumbent Jim Hughes held on to his District 5 seat for a third term. Hughes beat Mark Gandolfo, 7,288-4,023.

There is little surprise that Thomas Coward won his race. He collected 10,733 votes. He had no opponents for the seat that Claude Morgan leaves in District 1.
In School Board races, the two incumbents—Ralph Baxter and Karen Callaghan—handily held on to their seats. They beat Jay T. Allen and Kendall Fassett, who both ran as reformers. Callaghan had 6,826 votes, and Baxter had 5,894.
Allen trailed with 3,388 and Fassett with 3,116.
The actual top vote getter in School Board races was “Blank”; 8,592 voters did not vote for two candidates for the at-large seats.
See full results below.

I am truly surprised by the school board results.  Fassett and Allen made such an effort to reach out to the voters and to connect with them, and I think both did a very good job of that… whereas Baxter and Callaghan stayed in the shadows and said almost nothing.
8592 blank votes… not sure what to think of that…

Congratulations are in order to Patti, Jim and Tom.  I would also like to thank those voters who supported me; I am grateful for it.  I learned a lot about campaigning and I know where I can improve for the next time - maybe in 2 years when Linda Boudreau’s “At-Large” seat comes open.

I will continue to serve the community on the Planning Board and look forward to working on the Comprehensive Plan.

There will be significant challenges ahead for this community with some significant fiscal decisions that need to be made and I hope that our current and future Councilors are ready to come together and truly lead this city.

I am thrilled and overwhelmed to have received such a strong showing of support from the people of South Portland in this election and I look forward to serving on the City Council.  Thank you to all who supported me! I had a lot of help and support and I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement and work of my “core team.” I also want to say thank you to all of the candidates who put themselves out there to run for seats on City Council, especially Steve Onos.  He definitely raised my game!  I hope to foster continued citizen engagement, as it is important to have people participate in shaping our city’s future.  I met so many wonderful people during the campaign and had a lot of fun along the way.  Thank you.

I would also like to congratulate Patti, Tom, Jim, Ralph and Karen.
The city will be served well by their efforts to improve South Portland.  I want to thank the voters who supported me and my friends and family who helped in my campaign.  Running for local office is never easy and I am happy that nine of us were willing to do it and give South Portland a choice this year. Thanks again.

Thanks to all who gave me consideration. Regardless of the results, this was a great life experience. Thanks to Patti Smith for a fun day and congrats to her on her victory.

Congrats to Ralph and Karen, I wish the board well and hope they do a great job for SoPo.

peace… Kendall Fassett
