Message: Gary Crosby just announced that he will seek the District 3 City Council seat in 2009. Crosby, long active in civic affairs, said he has considered for a while running for the seat that Jim Soule now holds. Crosby, a local businessman, sits on the Zoning Board of Appeals and is on the board of the Evergreen Credit Union. He has run for the City Council previously but never held a seat. Crosby has been in the news lately, as a lead critic of city laws that allow dogs on Willard Beach year round. Crosby heads Save Willard Beach, which is seeking to put a question on the November ballot asking residents to ban dogs in the late spring and summer, and require them to be leashed on the beach off-season. Prior to his activism over dog-walking at the beach, Crosby opposed the reconstruction plan for South Portland High School. In the final two weeks before the citywide vote on the project, Crosby posted signs around the city with the message: “$56 Million Is Too Much!” The referendum was defeated by voters. http://www.southportlander.com/index.php/725/
