Mild Temps and Mild Manners at Willard Beach
The temp hit 50 degrees, prompting residents to turn out for a walk on Willard Beach. According to a head count by the South Portlander, there were about 25 people along the stretch of waterfront, from the concession stand to Southern Maine Community College. Dogs numbered 15, with all but two off leash.
The dogs ran running around, chasing sticks, swimming and playing with each other but no scrums were observed. No dog droppings were seen either. One Samaritan was seen walking into the dune grass to pick up dog litter that had been left behind. CommentsBy Isn't it funny?? on 2009 03 16 Isn’t it funny that all of the pictures posted from the past weekend are of the SMCC side of the beach? I’m sure that pictures taken from the area of the playground would paint a very different picture… By justcurious on 2009 03 16 And how can you be so sure? Were you also there or are you just conjecturing? By Hmmm... on 2009 03 16 Overheard tonight at the SP Community Center… on her way out the door the beloved Ms. Goodrich making fun of those who are “intimidated” by the dogs on the beach. Not cool. By Features Editor on 2009 03 17 What I find strange is all the “pro” dog commentary in the local weeklies lately. No differing opinion ? If you read the Sentry,Forcaster and Current this week, you will see the same letter to the editor posted here on 3/6. It’s almost as good as a paid political ad. Almost like someone has connections and is pulling a few strings… Hmmm I wonder…. By justcurious on 2009 03 17 Features Editor: Did you miss the flood of letters about poop and “disease” in the Sentry a few weeks ago? They made me wonder how I ever survived growing up on a farm. Yet here I am, the third farming generation in my family to thrive though I’ve stepped in my share of poop. By ProDogGuy on 2009 03 18 RE: Isn’t it funny?? please send pictures and video to paint this picture for us. RE: Features Editor you are welcome to write your opinion if it differs. What we need is proof. Show us the mounds of feces. Show us the scuffles, the attacks. Let us hear this barking. It’s all so nebulous. I’ve been to Willard with my dogs many times, and have not even once seen poop that wasn’t quickly picked up. If a dog mis-behaves in the least, it’s owner has always made swift effort to correct. I have had sand thrown at me by unruly children, while their parents sit and smoke (leaving cigarrette butts I might add). I have tripped in man-made holes left when the kids got bored. I have pulled my dogs from the drain pipe when who-knows-what is coming out. To me, at least, the only way to make Willard perfect is to ban every living thing. It’s all silliness. It’s all petty. There are bigger problems. Can’t we all just enjoy our public spaces? And if we can’t, since we can’t satisfy everyone, all the time, can we work to making sure the MOST people get the BEST use of the space? Please? By whodat on 2009 03 19 Here’s a “nebulous” story PDG… Hope it helps. http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php?id=245775&ac=PHnws |
